Our vegan biography

When we set up the Vegan Village 13 years ago, 'vegan' was seen as a dirty word. Many companies felt that if they marked their products as vegan, people wouldn't buy them!

Leading the way

We helped many vegan companies take their first steps on the web in the late 90's, including Plamil, GreenEye and Dolma who we still work with all these years later.

Our Yorkshire Vegans party at Wild Ginger in 1998 will be remembered as a real feelgood event by all who attended. It was possibly the first ever vegan cheese and wine party (with thanks to Redwood and Vinceremos) and there was a hemp fashion show too!

The same year we sponsored the first National Vegan Festival and won the Vegan Society's Best New Product/Service for the classic Vegan Village website (BBC Vegetarian Good Food called us a "must visit" site). We also achieved local coverage of vegan issues in print (Yorkshire Evening Post) and radio (BBC Radio Leeds).

Vegan campaigners

We have personally supported many local vegan events such as the South West VegFest, Vegan Essex events, Yorkshire Vegans, Leeds Vegetarians and Vegans, and more recently fundraising at our local horse sanctuary, Hope Pastures.

On a professional level we have worked with many vegan campaigning organisations and continue to work closely with two exceptional groups - Animal Aid and Uncaged Campaigns. (For more details read about our special projects and You Bet - our Desktop Campaign to promote Horse Racing Awareness Week.)

Vegan research

In 2000 we set up the Vegan Research Panel to find out about 21st century vegans. We discovered everything you want to know about other vegans, from what they wanted for Christmas to their views on genetically modified food!

This research was possibly ahead of its time, and hits to the panel website show that interest in vegan statistics has increased significantly over the last few years. (Maybe it's time for the panel to make a comeback!)

A big thank you!

In 2006 we were nominated for the Heroes of the Vegan Movement project, topping Liz's previous media accolade (an interview in Vegan Views, issue 101 2004)!

In 2007, the Vegan Village was voted Best Vegan Media/Publication in the Yaoh Vegan Environmental Awards, and was nominated again in 2009.
